Do you use natural ingredients?
All of the ingredients that go into our products - the herbs, oils, butters, essential oils, emulsifiers, and preservatives - are high quality and organic (or organically grown) where possible. We made a decision when we founded Petal + Hive that we would not use synthetic fragrances or emulsifiers (used in lotion to make it creamy and light), and that our preservatives would be as natural as possible (preservatives are used in lotion and scrubs to keep them from spoiling). Quality and trust is important to us.
Do you use natural preservatives?
Our preservatives are on the highly reputable Whole Foods Acceptable Premium Preservative List. They don't contain parabens, and are not formaldehyde donors, meaning they don't break down and release formaldehyde into the product after it is produced and bottled.
To identify our preservatives when you read our labels, look for these terms: Lactobacillus Ferment, Benzyl Alcohol, Potassium Sorbate, and Sorbic Acid.
We do not currently use Phenoxyethanol. We try to stay away from using it, but if we create a hard-to-preserve product and cannot safely use a natural preservative, we will consider using it.
Phenoxyethanol is a synthetically produced preservative made to mimic a natural compound found in green tea. Although it's a synthetic preservative, it has been found to be safe at low levels. Like our other preservatives, it's included on the Whole Foods Acceptable Premium Preservative List.
Do your fragrances contain phthalates?
No. Phthalates are chemicals that are used in products across many industries, and are often found in skin care and fragrances. Our fragrances are pure essential oils and blends of essential oils and pure botanical ingredients. We don't use synthetic fragrance oil, which can contain phthalates, in any of our products. Research about the effects of phthalates on our bodies is ongoing, but some people try to minimize their exposure to the chemicals because of concerns about cancer and reproductive health.
Do your products contain gluten?
Our customers who are sensitive to gluten know that Vitamin E is sometimes made from wheat. Vitamin E is present in many of our products, and our supplier assures us that it does not contain any gluten.
Why do you put herbs in every product?
We infuse every product with herbal blends because we have seen how much of a difference herbs can make. The right herbs can make a lotion or lip balm feel more moisturizing, and can help a salve to make your skin feel less irritated.

What's the difference between a cream and balm, especially if they contain the same herbs?
Some of our products contain the same herbs but have different applications.
A lotion or cream is fantastic when it's used under clothing or on a large area of skin.
A balm is a wax and oil based product that is great for small areas, or for very dry skin.
I don't see a product on your website, but I would love it if you made it!
